Today is the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Poking around, I found this short item, from the Fictional Newswire

New York (FN) — Eleven years after the World Trade Center attacks here in September 2001, most haven’t forgotten … they just don’t know why they were supposed to remember.
“Uh, I’m pretty sure it had to do with ‘coming together’ or ‘everything has changed’ or something like that,” said Bill, our waiter at Barney’s Chop Shop. “Is that right?”
Bill noted that in the years following the attacks patrons of the steakhouse would start their meals with Manhattan Clam Chowder instead of New England, and stopped asking for Russian or French dressing because of perceived tepid support for the U.S. by those governments.
“Yeah, but then the Patriots got good, the damn Red Sox won a couple Series, and, you know, time passed,” said Bill. “They stopped ordering the New York Steak, too, and that had been selling like crazy.”
Bill said they hadn’t needed to put it on special “in like forever” — a big change from prior to the attacks.
Spreading his hands a little, Bill said, “I like a good Porterhouse myself.”

The odd thing isn’t that we didn’t come together or change everything, or stay together or change anything, it’s that we thought this would do it.

That’s not how it works.
